Indian Land is an unincorporated community found in what’s known as the panhandle of Lancaster County. Currently, the community is home to just under 29,000 residents. U.S. Highway 521 runs directly through the community and connects it with Charlotte to the north and to the rest of Lancaster County to the south.
Prior to European settlement of the area, what is now Indian Land was home to the Catawba and Waxhaw tribes. Their presence provided the inspiration for the community. While the first settlers in the area date back to 1852, the presence of an organized community began in the 1770s. By 1798, what would be known as Indian Land was established.
For much of the 19th century, Indian Land remained a farming and ranching community. The growth of textiles in the area provides some job opportunities for the residents. Ranching and farming remained staples well into the 20th century, and provided some stability as the textile industry began to shrink after 1970.
While retaining a small town feel, Indian Land has provided the ideal setting for a number of business headquarters. Such diverse companies as the Sharonview Federal Credit Union, Inspiration Networks, Continental Tire America, and Movement Mortgage maintain a presence there.
